Volunteer Opportunities
Most of our volunteering takes place in the warehouse and is based on what the greatest needs are that day. Warehouse volunteers may be asked to do any of the following:
Warehouse
- Building food boxes in an assembly line. Product is taken from bins on a table and put into boxes. Some lifting and box breakdown is required for when product in bins runs low. Boxes also need to be stacked on a pallet. Must be 18 or older and able to use box cutter
- Direct Client Contact in the extra room. Assist clients with receipt of emergency food boxes. Aid clients by distributing eggs, baked goods, and other perishables.
- Sorting, repacking and condensing food items that come in packages too large to distribute. This includes sorting eggs in to dozens, repackaging pinto beans into smaller servings and repackaging frozen food items that come in large quantities. Special attention needs to be paid to quality of product being repackaged.
- Sorting and safety checking food that was collected from food drives as well as other donations such as bread and baked goods. Special attention needs to be paid to expiration dates, quality of food donated and condition of the packaging.
Backpack Program Volunteer
- Volunteers work in an assembly line to fill food packages that will be placed in backpacks for food-insecure children. This is a group volunteer activity. Backpacks are built every two weeks during the school year.
Food Drive Volunteer
- Volunteers are at grocery stores handing out flyers, accepting donations, and thanking donors. Typically a volunteer shift is 2-3 hours. This is a great group activity and is child friendly. Food drives are typically on Saturdays.
Client Certification Volunteer
- The volunteer will work with clients in our certification area and will need to be computer literate, able to follow government regulations and provide a long term volunteer commitment. Volunteers are needed for this job on Tuesdays.
